National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day: Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in San Diego

National Grilled Cheese Sandwich is celebrated on April 12th. Even though, according to food historians, people have been combining bread and cheese ever since ancient times, grilled cheese sandwiches, as we recognize as a staple food nationwide, have been around for one hundred years.

Or to be more precise, ever since the Great Depression happened. How did this come to be? During the aforementioned time, the time the country had undergone a huge recession, with unemployment and poverty hitting the highest records, some basic groceries still remained fairly inexpensive, such as bread. It was the time when processed cheese gained its acclamation, which still holds today. Once put together, it was a point of no return.

It quickly became so popular, it was on the menus throughout the nation, be it in households, school cantinas, or even WW2 chefs’ menus in charge of feeding thousands of hungry and exhausted soldiers’ mouths.

Researchers of the Great Depression Era mention it was best combined with a bowl of warm tomato soup, most commonly Campbell’s. The Great Depression Cheese Sandwich underwent huge changes during the 40s and 50s, charging from its open form to its final form, with two slices of bread and cheese between.

Today, the Grilled Cheese Sandwich enjoys its well-earned popularity. It is, however, a tad complicated to achieve the perfect bite, as you must remember not to burn the bread while maintaining the soft, creamy, melted but not too gooey cheesy middle part of it. So why not eat out and have the perfection you crave on the go.
